January 2008

Saturdays & Sundays, 1:00 PM & 3:00 PM: "Powder Monkey Tour for Kids"

The USS Constellation invites youngsters to come on board to learn about the lives of the young boys who served as powder monkeys. In a hands-on tour, young "recruits" will find out how lads from eleven to eighteen lived in Mr. Lincoln's Navy: how they dressed, ate, where they slept and lived, and some of the things they did on and off duty each day.

January 12th, 12:00 PM Noon: “Curatorial Corner.”

Constellation’s curator and historian, John Pentangelo, provides unique insight into the museum’s archival collections and a first-hand lesson in archival management.

December 31st, 10:00 PM - January 1st: 1 AM: 6th Annual New Years Eve Deck Party.

Ring in the New Year, sip champagne, & watch the Fireworks high above the Inner Harbor crowds.  A twilight menu provided by Charles Levine Caterers will be served with local ale, wine, mulled cider and coffee.  There will be music, special tours, cannon firings and more. Reservations required, additional fee.

Saturdays & Sundays, 2:00 PM: "To Catch a Thief: Constellation Fights the Slave Trade."

Constellation’s proudest years of her century of service may have occurred during the three years immediately before the Civil War when, as flagship of the U.S. Navy’s African Squadron, she led this nation’s fight against the trans-Atlantic trafficking of slaves.  Today, little is said or written about those times, and even less is known, but they and this ship were important parts of the struggle against slavery that would eventually overwhelm the nation and, ultimately, free a people.   Tour and hands-on activities combine to bring into view Constellation’s active career combating the slave trade and her exciting capture of the slave ship Cora from which she rescued 705 captive Africans.   To Catch a Thief is also available year-round with group reservations.

February 9th, 12:00 PM: "Living History Interpretation Aboard a Man-of-War."

Historical Interpreter and former manager of the Civil War Museum, Paul O’Neil, focuses on the goals and techniques applied to those who go to the sea in ships.

March 8th, 12:00 PM: "Serving With Pride – African-Americans in the United States Navy" Regina T. Akers, Ph.D.

EVENT CANCELED - WILL BE RESCHEDULED

Since 1775, black Americans enlisted into the ranks of the navy. Their numbers swelled as the nation faced crises-upon-crises, and they dwindled in the absence of national emergencies. Dr. Regina Akers, Archivist in the Operational Archives Branch of the Naval Historical Center, presents remarkable overview of that history and describes two centuries of progress and decline, ultimately culminating in today’s modern navy.

March 22nd, 6:00 PM: "Patrick O'Brian Wake"

Held the Saturday after St. Patrick’s Day, the Patrick O'Brian Wake is held in honor of the famed author, who passed away in 2000.  Each year, a small group of enthusiasts gathered on board USS Constellation to celebrate O'Brian's life and the his Aubrey/ Maturin novels.  Nicknamed the ‘Patty O’Wake,’ this event includes reading passages from the novels, firing the cannon for honors, conducting the formal passing of the port, discussions on nautical trivia and enjoying food and drink from the companion book, Lobscouse and Spotted Dog in the Captain's Cabin.  Participants provide a donation to the Constellation and must bring one menu item from the list of available food or drinks.  Seating is limited and the list fills quickly.  If you are interested in attending, please contact Rick Gay at richardgay@cox.net.

March 22nd, 12:00 PM: “St. Brendan the Navigator.”

Explore the navigation techniques probably used by St Brendan and his monks when they crossed the Atlantic in a small leather boat, from celestial (stars) navigation to land finding.  A fascinating story of the first European to make it to North America.

March 23rd, 12:00 PM: Delayed Opening

Due to the Easter Holiday, The USS Constellation Museum will be opening to the public at 12:00 Noon, rather then 10:00 AM.
