Operations Leadership

We’re seeking a generalist leader for our Operations team who can contribute strategically to the company and help Constellation build a world-class organization as we grow.

Constellation is a nonprofit research center whose mission is to help the world navigate the development of superhuman AI. We host and support researchers from nonprofit organizations, universities, companies, think tanks, and government. Our programs foster knowledge sharing and collaboration across the AI safety field.

We’re seeking a generalist leader for our Operations team who can contribute strategically to the company and help Constellation build a world-class organization as we grow.  Reporting to the COO, this individual will be responsible for complex, high-impact initiatives and domains, and will be expected to solve large, ambiguous problems with very limited direction.  Flexibility and the desire to think and communicate from first principles is key.  This role likely involves managing and growing a team, but could be scoped as a senior individual lieutenant to the COO.  

This role could accommodate a mid-career leader capable of managing teams and ready to have a more strategic impact, or a more senior leader with executive experience at a larger company.  

Constellation is currently a team of 7, with plans to roughly double in size this year.  As an early company leader, this person will find their duties involve both strategic matters as well as hands-on operational work.

Example Responsibilities

Responsibilities will be tailored to the individual, but could include:

  • Managing and growing a team of reports covering one or more major operational domains such as Program Operations, People Operations, or IT
  • Owning complex, ambiguous, and strategically vital projects with limited structure or direction, such as broad needs around Constellation network membership, company metrics, or information security
  • Facilitating and designing improvements to our company’s planning process
  • Navigating challenging membership situations with complex interpersonal and interorganizational dynamics
  • Helping ensure roles are clear and effective communication is flowing throughout the organization
  • Helping strategically guide organizational development as we grow, including people, structure, process, and culture
  • Senior backup for mission-critical finance and accounting functions
  • Some hands-on operational work for a time, as the company scales

Skills Needed

  • An entrepreneurial approach capable of rapid iterative progress towards pragmatic, self-selected goals
  • Comfort operating in strategic contexts and well as doing nuts-and-bolts tactical work
  • Distilling ambiguous, complex situations to their core insights
  • Quantitative analysis and probabilistic thinking
  • Building and rolling out simple and effective organizational processes that people like using
  • Ability to identify and get buy-in from key stakeholders, both inside and outside the organization
  • Strong interpersonal skills that can build relationships and skillfully navigate difficult conversations
  • Reliable project management, including planning, optimization, proactive risk identification and mitigation, and stakeholder communication

Compensation

$150,000 - $250,000 a year

This is a full time, on-site role. We may be willing to sponsor visas for this role, though our ability to do so may depend on the circumstances. We would like the candidate to start as soon as possible after receiving an offer, though there is some flexibility.

Our office is in downtown Berkeley, CA, thirteen seconds from the nearest BART (metro) stop. Compensation will depend on experience, but will likely be $150k-$250k/year.  We offer catered lunches and dinners, and cover PPO health, dental, and vision insurance.
